The incident – which last barely 20 seconds, – occurred as they watched a Meteor jet fighter returning to base. The following day Flight Lieutenant John Kilburn wrote a report based on the sighting witnessed by him and four colleagues. He said as the fighter descended they noticed an object in the sky flying at 10 to 20, feet some five miles behind the Meteor. The object was silver and circular and appeared to be travelling much slower than the fighter but on the same course. At first they thought it was a parachute, then the Meteor turned towards Dishforth and the object followed but after a few seconds stopped its pendulous motion and descent and then began to rotate on its axis.

Celtic tribes[ edit ] Early inhabitants of Yorkshire were Celts , who formed two separate tribes, the Brigantes and the Parisi. The tribe controlled most of Northern England and more territory than any other Celtic tribe in England. That they had the Yorkshire area as their heartland is evident in that Isurium Brigantum now known as Aldborough was the capital town of their civitas under Roman rule.
Six of the nine Brigantian poleis described by Claudius Ptolemaeus in the Geographia fall within the historic county. Initially, this situation suited both the Romans and the Brigantes, who were known as the most militant tribe in Britain. Queen Cartimandua left her husband Venutius for his armour bearer, Vellocatus , setting off a chain of events which changed control of the Yorkshire area.

History[ edit ] According to one etymology, “Cottingham” is thought to derive from both British and Saxon root words: At this time, the Domesday Book shows the Cottingham manor included a mill, five fisheries, woodland and farm land. In , Thomas de Wake received a charter allowing Cottingham to have two annual fairs and a weekly market; he also founded an Augustinian priory, licensed in , and built by Due to potential disputes over the land it was built on, the priory moved to Newton south of Cottingham in , becoming known as Haltemprice Priory.
On John’s death, the manor passed to Margaret’s daughter Joan of Kent , from whom the estate passed to Thomas Holland, 2nd Earl of Kent , her eldest son. The siege was ultimately unsuccessful with some of the ringleaders hanged at York ; their complaint was the extraction of water which they said had deprived them of water, as well the dike having damaged their fields.

Gawthorpe Gawthorpe is a small village on the northern outskirts of Ossett with historic ties to Dewsbury and the settlement of Kirkhamgate via the Gawthorpe Lane footpath in Wakefield. For many years, Gawthorpe was considered a separate hamlet, but in , it was joined with Ossett and South Ossett to become Ossett-cum-Gawthorpe.
Immediately to the left of the building housing the shop is the Gawthorpe Zion Chapel. However, there is evidence to suggest the village may have existed in Roman times and certainly there was a small Roman settlement at nearby Street Side, alongside the old Roman road.
