We flew home yesterday. Today we hit the ground running well in summer break terms with Vacation Bible School at our church. I’ve volunteered for several years, even before I had a child of my own. While I love working with the kids at our church, the teacher in me sees a need for consistent rules in group settings. The clip art is from Scrappin Doodles. If you would like a free copy, you can click on the picture below.

I also created a printable mini book with this same set of rules. You can have a free copy of this mini book by clicking on the picture. Using this set of rules in the elementary groups has worked our really well so far. Most of the kids at my church know the WBT Rules from their schools. Learning the church version of the rules has been a snap. They also give all the volunteers most not used to wrangling groups of kiddos a tool to use when managing their groups.

These Fabulous Fall Math Centers are designed for intermediate classrooms. We are continuing to build our collection of seasonal math centers geared towards fourth and fifth grade classroom. If there is a skill you would like to see us cover in the next set, please let us know.

At what part of our day is centers time? How long is it? Our learning centers are offered during free choice centers time. It is one of the first events of our day, after our morning meeting. It is 60 minutes long and the preschoolers can be at any center they wish, for as long or as short as they want. I feel strongly that with 3 year olds, they get time to explore areas they are interested in. What if the children stay in one area most of the hour?

Rarely do our preschoolers stay in one area the entire hour. Because we introduce each center during our morning meeting, they are naturally curious and want to explore several areas. Many times they will leave a center and return later, realizing there is more exploring to do. If we do see a child staying away from certain centers, we might encourage him to come try something else. How do we set up an inviting center? We put great thought into how we set up each center, especially at the beginning of the year when we are still learning what our preschoolers are interested in.

Around the Clock Here is a center game to reinforce clock numeral placement. For each game board, glue a construction paper clock to a colored background. Label each of several chips in sets of 12 chips with numerals 1 – In turn have each player roll a 12 sided die, then cover that number on her clock with the correctly labeled chip. If a player rolls a numeral that has already been covered with a chip, she must pass the die to the next player. Continue play until on numerals on each clock are covered.

We are lovin’ our math stations so far! It’s just different from the way I’ve always taught math. What math series do you use? Also, I’ve changed a few stations to go along more with Common Core. Check out the pics below to see what we’re doing. Feel free to PIN the pictures to your math board.

Beginning of the Year Math Stations in First Grade Teaching math to my first graders at the beginning of the year involves a lot of modeling routines, procedures, and new games/activities.

View our full disclosure policy here. No more holiday themes to inspire and motivate little minds. Addition and Subtraction Winter Math Mats Your students are going to love these cute mitten math mats! The winter math mats are suitable for kindergarten and 1st grade. You can use them in your homeschool or traditional classroom.

I like to put them in my math center. You could also use them in small groups or send them home for students to use at home for extra practice. It also makes this activity more effective when children can use dry erase markers to write in the math equations. Addition Students will start by rolling 2 dice or one die, twice and then writing the number in the equation at the bottom of their addition math mat printable in the first box.

Students will then build the equation with cotton balls or another wintry themed math manipulative like snowflake scatter to represent the corresponding number rolled on the die in the first half of the mitten to show one part of the whole. Students will repeat these steps for the second half of the mitten. Lastly, use a dry erase marker to write the answer to the math equation in the 3rd box located below the mitten. Encourage children to count the total number of cotton balls in both sides of the mitten in order to find the answer.

Begin with rolling one die for the starting point.

Illustrator Setting Up for Student Independence Kinders are great at using labels with pictures to put things away and find them again, so my classroom is covered! I put lots of icons directly onto the container or bin to provide lots of visual support. Centers can pretty much be done anywhere within the classroom , but my kinders often complete the activities wherever I first modeled them.

Non-Fiction Center I include literacy center posters for each center that illustrates with picture icons what options students have. These posters help me teach the center at the beginning of the year, help me keep students on track throughout the year and inform administration as time goes on since they have all of our common core standards listed out. Routines make centers successful since when students know what is expected, they are much more likely to rise to those expectations.

Building upon their regular routine with new skills or challenges keeps things fresh, but with solid expectations. I need time to teach small groups while other students work independently. I also need the time I spend creating something for a center to be worthwhile. And lastly, the time I spend creating and setting up should should be able to set the long term value my students get out of it. By making the kindergarten center activities be choices or have options then I also have flexibility to meet with students or groups for as long as I need.
