Modern archaeology has confirmed that sites found in the Palliser Bay area of south Wairarapa, along the southern Wellington coastline and on Kapiti Island are some of the oldest recorded sites in New Zealand, dating back some years. This distinction is shared with sites in the Far North. There are several landmarks in the region that are associated with this deed. The Rimutaka, Tararua and Ruahine mountains make up the spine of the fish. Kupe Kupe is generally considered to be the first Polynesian explorer to come to this area. His influence is evident in the names around the region. Kupe and his people did actually populate the area, but returned to Polynesia.

The exact degree of Senegambian origins and any possible reasons for its relative greater dilution among African Americans are yet to be determined. Restoring the Links Hall, p. Most people will already be aware that West Africa provided the bulk of African captives to Jamaica. But making this further regional distinction within a comparative framework does provide additional insight.
Especially ancestral connections to both Ghana and Nigeria are proven to be paramount. While for the other nationalities a more regionally balanced composition is obtained. A similar finding although less finegrained was recently obtained for a samplegroup from Barbados. See these links below for more details: Afro-descendants are therefore essentially a mix of West Africans and Central Africans.
According to this view, Polynesians are mainly a part of a migration wave that came out of Taiwan. The western part of Polynesia was settled between and BC by people from Taiwan via the Philippines as well as parts of New Guinea. Eastern Polynesia was settled beginning around AD as Polynesian voyagers began to set out from Tonga and Samoa and other islands of western Polynesia to settle the Hawaiian Islands, New Zealand, and Easter Island, among other islands of the region.
According to the Slow Boat Hypothesis, the ancestors of the Polynesians are of Austronesian descent and still have a connection to Taiwan, but the ancestors of modern Polynesians spent several centuries intermarrying with people of Papuan and Indonesian lineage before setting out to Polynesia. The first view is supported by linguistic and ethnographic data, but there is genetic evidence for the second hypothesis.

Ancient history[ edit ] The Pangasinan people, like most of the people in the Malay Archipelago , are descendants of the Austronesian-speakers who settled in Southeast Asia since prehistoric times. Comparative genetics, linguistics and archaeological studies locate the origin of the Austronesian languages in Sundaland , which was populated as early as 50, years ago by modern humans.
Southeast Asian maritime trade network[ edit ] A vast maritime trade network connected the distant Austronesian settlements in Southeast Asia , the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. See Article History Alternative Title: Oceanian art Oceanic art and architecture, the visual art and architecture of native Oceania , including media such as sculpture , pottery, rock art , basketry, masks, painting, and personal decoration. In these cultures , art and architecture have often been closely connected—for example, storehouses and meetinghouses are often decorated with elaborate carvings—and so they are presented together in this discussion.
For more general explorations of media, see individual media articles e. For a discussion of the characteristics, functions, and forms of masks, see mask. General characteristics Materials and techniques Until the 16th and 17th centuries, when European cultures appeared upon the scene, Oceanian cultures maintained various forms of Neolithic technology. The only exception was in the northwest of New Guinea, where the people living around Geelvink Bay Teluk Cenderawasih imported very small quantities of metal from the Indonesians of the Moluccas Maluku.
The technique of forging was jealously guarded, virtually as a cult secret; some tools were traded but only in quantities far too small to have made much impact on normal working conditions. Throughout the rest of Melanesia and in Polynesia and Micronesia , the basic tool remained the stone blade, which was hafted as an adz or an ax and sometimes interchangeably as both.
Tridacna shell was sometimes used for blades in parts of Oceania where stone was in short supply, including Micronesia and the Solomon Islands. When obsidian was available, it was chipped into blades for use as both weapons and tools. Other working materials included bamboo and bivalve shells, which take extremely sharp edges. Some fine cutting and engraving was done with unhafted boar tusks or with hafted shark and rodent teeth.

Oceanic art and architecture after European contact Effects of European contact The earliest Westerners to explore the Pacific Ocean undertook their dangerous voyages with firm determination to discover wealth in one form or another. Except in rare cases, they had no lively curiosity about the islanders. They engaged neither their interests nor their skills in recording island life; indeed, their visits were often too brief to leave time for observations.
Tense and even hostile encounters were frequent and must have further distorted the mutual views of those involved. They reveal that in general the material culture they witnessed was approximately the same as was recorded and collected by the late 18th-century explorers and their successors. Thus it seems that, in many parts of the Pacific, material culture had reached a settled state by the 16th century and remained conservative for two more centuries.

We present a radiocarbon date and an ancient DNA sequence from a single chicken bone recovered from the archaeological site of El Arenal-1, on the Arauco Peninsula, Chile. These results not only provide firm evidence for the pre-Columbian introduction of chickens to the Americas, but strongly suggest that it was a Polynesian introduction. Despite claims that it might be native to the region 1 , it has never been recovered or reported from paleontological, Paleo-Indian, or, until now, prehistoric archaeological contexts in the Americas.
A Portuguese or Spanish introduction to the east coast of South America around AD has been suggested 2 , but when Pizarro reached Peru in , he found that chickens were already an integral part of Incan economy and culture, suggesting at least some history of chickens in the region. Consequently, there have been numerous suggestions of a pre-European chicken introduction to the west coast of South America 3 — 5 , in which both Asian and Polynesian contacts have been proposed 1 , 4 , 6.
Here, we provide the first unequivocal evidence for a pre-European introduction of chickens to South America and indicate, through ancient DNA evidence, that the likely source of that introduction was Polynesia. This evidence has implications for debates about ancient Polynesian voyaging capabilities as well as those addressing prehistoric population interactions and exchange. This study also presents the first published ancient DNA sequences for chickens providing valuable data for researchers concerned with the loss of genetic variation in modern domestic stocks 7.
Polynesians introduced dogs, pigs, rats and chickens to many of the islands they settled 8. Chicken remains first appear in Vanuatu and Tonga between and B. Linguistic and archaeological evidence suggest that the bottle gourd Lagenaria siceraria , also from the Americas, was present in Eastern Polynesia before AD 14 ,

The self-name is cultura chilena Orientation Identification. There exist different explanations about the origins of the name “Chile. In contrast to many other Latin American nations, Chile has not experienced the emergence of strong regionalism or conflicting regional cultural identities. Since the late nineteenth century, both the northern and southern regions have been mainly populated by people coming from the central region, helping to strengthen the country’s cultural homogeneity. Notwithstanding the existence of a strong dominant national culture, some cultural regional traditions can be identified.
In the southern region the Mapuche Indians are a large cultural group who strongly contributed to the formation of Chilean culture.

The most current reliable evidence strongly indicates that the initial settlement of New Zealand occurred around CE , at the end of the medieval warm period. Migration accounts vary among tribes iwi , whose members may identify with several waka in their genealogies whakapapa. In the last few decades, mitochondrial-DNA mtDNA research has allowed an estimate to be made of the number of women in the founding population—between 50 and Language-evolution studies and mtDNA evidence suggest that most Pacific populations originated from Taiwanese aborigines around 5, years ago suggesting prior migration from the Asian or Chinese mainland.
Subsequently it was found that 96 per cent of Polynesian mtDNA has an Asian origin, as do one-third of Polynesian Y chromosomes, with the remaining two-thirds being from New Guinea and nearby islands. Other species, also now extinct, included a swan, a goose and the giant Haast’s eagle , which preyed upon the moa. Marine mammals—seals in particular—thronged the coasts, with evidence of coastal colonies much further north than those which remain today [update].
Further south, at the mouth of the Shag River Waihemo , evidence suggests that at least 6, moa were slaughtered by humans over a relatively short period of time. It was common for people to establish small temporary camps far inland for seasonal hunting. Settlements ranged in size from 40 people e. Radiocarbon dating shows the site was occupied from about to Due to tectonic forces, some of the Wairau Bar site is now underwater.
Work on the Wairau Bar skeletons in showed that life expectancy was very short, the oldest skeleton being 39 and most people dying in their 20s. Most of the adults showed signs of dietary or infection stress.

Review of Polynesian Cultural Center Reviewed December 1, Excellent exhibits from a good variety of Polynesian cultures, good food and shows. The reserved seating for Ha show was well worth it We ran out of time to visit all the villages, so I’d recommend arriving earlier to get most out of the day. The buffet was good quality and plentiful very tempting to over-eat. The show during the buffet was great too. The highlight of the day was the Ha Breath of Life show, simply spectacular — don’t miss it.
The lowlight was the one hour wait between finishing dinner and show start time. The villages close at 5 pm, so there is only the marketplace with the usual tourist clutter for sale after that boring. The dinner start time may be too early for some e. While all the village feature shows were very good, the standout one not to miss is the Samoan one.
