Monday, December 9, Book Speed Dating: I’ve wanted to try it out for awhile now, and I finally went for it last week. I wanted to use a smaller “test” group before trying this with a class of 35 eighth graders, so I tried it with our resource reading classes first. These classes are designed for struggling readers and generally have fewer than ten students. Because of the nature of the class, the students do not tend to be readers, nor are they generally intrinsically-motivated to read. I had the best results with the eighth grade class, who better understood all my dating jokes “sometimes you have to kiss some frogs”, “sometimes you have to throw that fish back in”, “if at first you don’t succeed”, etc. They really enjoyed this lesson, and my eighth grade library assistants, who saw the speed dating as they worked in the library, all asked me to do this with their classes, too.
I have put together a list of good Speed Dating questions for you. Pick and choose from the list below and have a few of these up your sleeve on the evening. They will help you find out a little more about the people you will meet at your Slow Dating event and will help keep the conversation flowing.
The activity used is a variation on the popular practice of speed dating. In this exercise, students “speed date” each other to practice role plays calling for “chunks” or phrases used for each situation.
I use an App called d creature to effectively engage middle to lower achieving boys. Due to confidence issues I find some students are reluctant to engage in practical tasks such as drawing. By allowing use of the app it is a virtual kiln where students can add pattern and colour etc , students are dealing with an interface they are familiar with virtuality.
The quick and effective results they achieve on the app used as a starter. Gives the students the confidence to move from the virtual to the physical process of making and problem solving. I use a minimum work list which boys in particular really like and promotes independence. Click this link to download: The aim is to encourage pupils to become more confident, read the recipes, help each other and problem solve.
I use this with yrs Pupils are given 2 laminated hands at the start of the lesson.

I have tried the idea of Speed Dating before, but never in a geometry class. I have used it in upper level courses before, but I wasn’t sure how it would work with a younger group. I am happy to report that things went great!
Speed friendshipping is a fun way to start. We played this game with the 14 and year-old young men and young women from my church last week. We used it as an opportunity to teach the youth about body language and social skills for making friends.
Lower levels are very literal and need time to prep, but my upper levels get a shorter prep time and often use alter-egos instead of their true personality. It makes it hysterical. I set up the room with long tables with girls on one side and boys on the other so they are facing each other. For example, if you have 18 guys and 12 girls, you will need 3 guys to be on the girl side. Here is the super basic form that I used with Spanish I to plan their answers and questions.
Random Stories – This is not fancy, but is a wonderful way to get the kids speaking. I divide the students into different groups and give them each a photograph. The photos are usually of landscapes, street scenes, etc. Students then work together to come up with stories about the picture. Each student creates a sentence, and the others need to build on it. I get some truly crazy stories, but they all stay in the target language!
Board Games – I use the game Clue with my students. I couldn’t find a Spanish version, so I had to adapt an English version.

Skill and Drill Without the Worksheets I just wanted to share a quick idea for skill and drill with you today. Maybe it’s something you already do, but if not, read on – my students LOVE this activity. This activity, which we affectionately call “Speed-Dating Math” is the perfect activity for when your students need that extra drill practice, and you know you don’t want to pull out the boring worksheets.
We’re deep into our multiplication and division unit right now, and this is how we practice using the traditional algorithm. Basically, set your students up in pairs so they are facing eachother – long rows of desks or tables work the best for this. Our desks are currently set-up in a “U” formation, so this works well. Each student needs a whiteboard. Before I had individual whiteboards, we would use laminated paper or paper in page protectors – basically anything with a wipe-off surface.
Students draw a line down their whiteboards to divide the surface in half. I write a question on the board and give them exactly one minute to solve it on one half of their whiteboards. After that I give them exactly one minute to discuss their answers with their partner this is perfect for those students who need a little extra time to solve because they can work with their partner to finish solving the question. Then, using the other half of the board, we solve it together on the whiteboard, with students writing down the actual solution we do together this takes about one minute also And the last VERY IMPORTANT step – they get one minute to compare their solutions with the correct solution.
However, there are a lot of similarities in getting the attention of a potential mate and getting the attention of a trade show attendee. Sep 9th, Posts: It’s called ‘Speed Dating‘ and is basically exactly what it says on the tin. It lasted about 40 minutes with me, and that will depend on the size of your class, ability, etc. Start off by making sure everyone knows what ‘speed dating‘ means. So this is how you do it There are 14 character cards you will need to make more if you have a larger class ; 7 girls and 7 guys. Shuffle them up and hand them out so each student has a card – male characters don’t necessarily have to go to the boys, and vice versa!
The aim is for each person to find their ‘perfect match’. Also, if you have an uneven number of students, you can sit in to make it even. Make sure everyone has understood everything that’s written on their card. Then sit them down along a row of tables, with the ‘guys’ on one side and the ‘girls’ on the other. Give them each a ‘Speed Dating Table’ to fill out as they go.
