I remember that car audio is typically 8 ohm, and I also recall that using 8 ohm on your home stereo is bad for the speakers. They’ll work inside, but it’s hard on the voice coils since they’ll be getting more amperage than designed for. Actually, most home audio is 8ohm and most car audio is 4 ohm, at least, that’s the way it was in the 90’s when I was big into the car audio. Trying to find AVRs that handle 4-ohm loads specifically “on the cheap” is no easy task. I went through that search myself and settled on my current Denon. Again, unless you plan on driving your speakers to ear-splitting levels, most quality brand AVRs will drive 4-Ohm speakers just fine at normal listening levels. Most AVRs with 4-Ohm or 6-Ohm speaker settings in their setup menus just put throttling circuits in place to prevent the amps from overheating if the load gets too great.

I always have to remind myself to double check which socket to plug the speaker cable into on the back of my Ampeg GVT15 head as I have a 2 x 10 cab with 2, 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel and also have the Ampeg 1 x 12 cab which has a 16 ohm speaker. Having only skimmed through the article briefly I’m at work at the moment! So, am I right in saying that, as my 2 x 10 cab is wired with the 8 ohm speakers in parallel giving 4 ohms impedance, this will be louder than if I had them wired in series which would give the cabinet a 16 ohm impedance rating?

Will my old speakers work with a new receiver? July 6, 8: I’ve been given a pair of unpowered speakers. But, I’m far from an audiophile, so I’d like some advice. As far as I can tell, the speakers are from a company called Soundwave and the specific model is “Silhouette”. I’ve been unable to find any information about the company or speakers, but my google-fu may be weak.
